Our Motto

KIA MANAWANUI

Be of a COURAGEOUS and COMPASSIONATE heart

At Makoura College we believe our motto is a 21st century formula for success for both individuals and communities. Kia Manawanui is a Maori proverb that embodies the following ideas:

Being courageous – involves being brave enough to give new learning, new activities and new opportunities a go, and to continue to do so, despite failure, until success has been achieved;

Being compassionate – involves helping, supporting and caring for others. At Makoura College we believe that when compassion is joined with courage, success will be assured. As stated above, achieving something new usually involves difficulty and therefore requires courage. However, courage is often not enough on its own in which case success relies on help and support from others. Hence via courage and compassion, we believe the success of all can be achieved. Furthermore, as we all know, when we receive help and support from others we in turn are more inclined to do the same (as in the saying “what goes around comes around”) resulting in increasing numbers of people helping each other, and ultimately leading to the success of all.

Kia Manawanui – Courage and Compassion
